March 20, 2010
10:00 amto1:00 pm

Join us March 20th, 2010 for our monthly meeting. Our meetings start at 10:00am and last until 1:00pm, although we usually adjourn a bit early to have a Chinese buffet. Everyone is welcome to attend. If you are curious about robotics please stop by. Bring your current project, in any state of completion, for show and tell or to ask for help. Our members come from a wide range of professions and are more than willing to lend a hand.

Special guest speaker – L. Paul Verhage

Topic: 4H robotics & near space ballooning
Summary: Paul will talk about his involvement with local 4H clubs and demonstrate some robots that he has built. He is also an accomplished near space balloonist with countless launches under his belt and will also be talking about amateur near space ballooning.

Paul’s website: http://nearsys.com/ and YouTube channel.

From Paul’s website: I’m a former United States Air Force officer and college network administrator. These days I teach electronics at Washburn Institute of Technology while working on a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Kansas. On the side, I design and build robotic and science projects and then write extensively about them and my findings. I also teach an astronomy class to the public and lead robotics workshops.

I’m in the middle of my most ambitious project, the writing of a novel. Staying as true to H.G. Wells as possible, the story is a sequel to The War of the Worlds and takes place in circa 1905. Tentively, the story is called Mars 1905.

The Xbee wireless data link

May meeting leader: Nick
Summary: Nick will demonstrate the Xbee radio/receiver and how to interface it to an Arduino.
